The books my boys ordered came in yesterday, these are the Mom's day gift's from my kids, Card Weaving, Learning to Weave (I can finally return the borrowed book to the library) and Woven Treasures. I'm so excited, I've been reading the Card Weaving book and am planning to warp it on the RH, I saw a youtube video that was done this way and it seemed possible and easier than my small inkle. I've also convinced the plastic department manager at work that he needs to make me some cards out of 1/16" plastic, we have a router machine that can accomplish 30 perfect cards in 2 mins flat much easier and longer lasting that the deck I cut up. I will owe him a knitted cap this is what we bartered for, frankly I think I got the better end of the deal ;) . In Woven Treasures there's a book cover that my son has requested for his Bible, that will take top priority over the card weaving but it's all in the works because I plan to make a strips for the book cover to mark pages with.
I also need to think about a wedding gift for our friends they're getting married in August which gives me some time, but I'm a bit stumped on what to create for them, they have been previously married and have a house full of everything, I thought about a nice gift card to a restaurant but also wanted to hand make something for them to mark their special day, any suggestions? knitting although that's a close call or woven, give me some ideas please. With all that is going on creatively, Meg over at Megweaves emailed the deadline for Pics2Picks, aaaaacccckkkkkk, June 5 OMG... really... already!!! I have one more project I wanted to accomplish for the exhibition so I have to get my behind in gear and git-her-done (is that the way he says it?). That one will be a surprise so I can't show any pics until the big reveal.
But.... I can show you pics of my new inkle weaving based on the fabric swatch I chose. This is my own design and I like the colors and pattern, I may never be able to repeat the pattern but I like it, actually on second thought, I could if I wrote it down, I guess I need to start an inkle loom journal to match all the other weaving and knitting journals (yet another project, whew all this should take me well into the end of this year).

Looks like some good books! I do have the Learning to weave and its such a wonderful and very helpful book to have!
Another pretty woven color design. Beautiful. So you've tried card weaving before? I've seen it done a couple of times on craft shows. Interesting. I wanted to share a couple of things with you. In the last issue of Mary Jane's Farm magazine, they show how to make a loom out of a shoebox that they cut slits in. It's cool and I've dog eared the page to possibly try in the future as I've never woven with yarn. Second, my friend loaned me the book the "Yarn Harlot". It's better than the name sounds. It's about a knitter obsessed with yarn and is full of short stories which made me laugh as I could relate to it with all my hobies.
Have a great day,
Nancy
Nancy - the Yarn Harlot is Stephanie Pearl McPhee, a celebrity in the knitting world, she's a fantastic knitter and funny! If you loved the book this is her blog http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/
If you get interested in weaving with yarn, you might want to look into getting a RH loom or and inkle they are small and not really too expensive if you hunt on Ebay. I've seen the shoebox and other cardboard assemblies they are fantastic to teach concepts. I've not tried the card weaving yet, but it's in the plans I can't wait.
Horrah for the books! I love the inkle weaving-very intricate and a perfect match for the fabric. Nice work. Definitely make something for their home for that August wedding-you can weave a table runner that will grace their meals together! Plenty of time!!!
Oh love that inkle band, so perfect for the fabric.
Can't wait to see the book cover either! It sounds to me too that you got the better end of the card weaving/hat knitting deal, but I'm sure the hat will be a work of wearable art in its own right.
Another book you might like for weaving is THE BIG BOOK OF WEAVING by Laila Lundell. I have found it very useful and informative. It's my go to book. I could never make hide nor hair out of Learning to Weave although I know it is a classic.
The inkle band looks great!
I pretty much learned to weave from Deb Chandler's book. And I've always thought card weaving looked like fun. I hope you have a chance to give it a try soon.
X-> Yes, June. Linda S said I was on a time "warp". You're way ahead of most of us, though, you know that, don't you?
a journal, what a novel idea, no pun intended. I don't know how, but somehow, the labels I pull of my yarn in the heat of the weaving moment get lost and I forget what I am weaving with. I should keep a notebook handy and take notes...
